Three hours in the day are the most anticipated for Marine and Artur Zakaryans. From 4 to 7 pm, they meet their son Hayk at the Intensive care and rehabilitation center under the Soldier’s House. After receiving a brain injury in the Artsakh war of 2020, Hayk is in a persistent vegetative state. For two years, the Zakaryans have been waiting for a miracle when Hayk will react to their words. Slowly but little miracles happen. Tears were Hayk’s first response to his parents. “When we talk, Hayk listens, and there are orders that he executes. We were expecting these results because every soldier treated in this medical Center receives exceptional attention,” says Artur Zakaryan.
After the 44-day Artsakh war, Hayk and many seriously injured soldiers were sent to various European countries for treatment. Hayk was in Germany for months when his parents decided to continue their son’s treatment in Armenia when they heard about the new Center. Native language, exceptional care, and qualified specialists ensure Hayk’s progress.
Sergey’s loud laughter is heard from the other room of the hospital when he sees his father. He still can’t speak, but he gives his father tears of happiness. “There is noticeable progress in three months: Sergey is sitting and walking,” says Arsen, Sergey’s father, who was wounded in the first Artsakh war and is also a beneficiary of the Soldier’s House.
Doctors have worked hard for months in Greece to save Sergey’s life. Sergey’s parents decided to continue their son’s treatment in Armenia because they were sure that recovery in the new intensive care center would be at the same level as in European hospitals.
Experts are sure that wounded soldiers in a minimally conscious state, when they hear speech in their native language, voices of relatives, and are surrounded by warmth, will have different results.
FRF sponsored the establishment of the Intensive care and rehabilitation center. Today, nine months after the Center’s opening, we are happy to witness our heroes receiving the best medical care and making progress in their homeland for free.
